The Carr Group

Scott Carr, CLU, can still remember lounging with his college roommates his junior year, musing about their futures. When he graduated, Scott said with confidence, he'd find a job that paid between $18-22,000 a year in anything, but sales.

That was 1984. Now Scott Carr, Managing Director of The Carr Group in Schaumburg, Illinois, and with Hoopis Financial Group, can proudly say that he's surpassed one of those goals— he makes well over $22,000. The moment he was recruited was when all his ideas about his second goal, and future, changed.

Scott met Tim Bohannon, Managing Partner in Minnesota, who was then a college unit director, at Illinois State University's job fair. Scott didn't have any idea what Bohannon did; all he knew was that he'd never met anyone as passionate about a career or as enthusiastic about a company.

"I was incredibly impressed by him," says Scott. "As he was telling me what I could do in my internship, I still didn't completely grasp the potential, but knew it was a chance to build my resume."

After graduation, Scott's wife accepted a CPA position and they relocated to Chicago. He met Harry Hoopis, CLU, ChFC, Managing Partner of the Hoopis Financial Group in Chicago, and Robert Kerrigan Jr., CLU, ChFC now Managing Partner of Strategic Financial Group in Los Angeles— two people he credits with changing his life.

"I'm a small-town kid in Chicago with a new wife and a new job. Their high expectations, and the environment they created, led me to make Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) in 1987." MDRT is the premiere association of financial professionals.

Mentored by managers
Scott Carr, a coach's kid, went to college so he could coach college sports. Then he looked around and realized that all of his role models—Bohannon, Kerrigan and Hoopis—were in fact, coaches.

"I told Harry Hoopis that if he thought I had the ability, I'm interested in coaching other people. He told me to write 100 lives and make MDRT; then we'll talk."

Scott did just that and a year later Harry Hoopis asked Scott to start a college unit. Six months later, Scott became field director. On the two-year anniversary of his first full-time contract, Kerrigan and Hoopis sat down with the 24-year-old Carr and offered him the chance to open a new office.

Taking the leap
Despite the enormous financial investment and significant leap of faith, Scott was inspired by the belief his role models had in him—and he seized the opportunity.

"As a leader and a coach, it's our responsibility to help people see who they can become, not just who they are. When I looked at myself, I saw a young guy with no bank account. They saw a coachable and disciplined person whose passion had already recruited four people into the business."

In 1987, Scott was appointed Managing Director in Schaumburg, where he began with only two people. Scott put in 16-hour days and plenty of sweat equity to build the office, which now has 38 representatives, 35 staff people and one purpose.

"I wake up every day with a single focus, to create an environment that challenges people to grow and develop personally, professionally and financially," he said. "It's exciting to watch people I've brought into the business build terrific practices and an outstanding lifestyle for their families— and knowing the role I played helping them."

Professional accomplishments
Throughout his Northwestern Mutual career, Scott has qualified for numerous company and industry awards, including the Million Dollar Round Table (Provisional Member—1987; Qualifying Member—1988-1992, 1995-1996, 2004), the OARS Award (2003), the New Financial Representative Award (1986, 1987, 1988), the National Quality Award (1987-1988, 1990, 1992-1994, 1996), and the National Sales Achievement Award (1987-1992).

Family life
Scott and his wife, Beth, have two children, Megan and Matt. They have lived in the Long Grove area for more than 18 years. Scott Carr is active in St. Mary Parish and the St. Mary’s school system.

Besides spending time with family, Scott enjoys golf, travel and coaching—especially coaching his son’s baseball team in the Buffalo Grove Recreational Association.
